Withings has acquired Biosency, expanding its remote monitoring capabilities for patients with respiratory insufficiency.
The connected health company said the deal supports its ambition to build an independent European business serving changing healthcare systems.
Founded in Rennes in 2017, Biosency has developed a modular remote monitoring system for patients with respiratory insufficiency and their caregivers.
The system includes a medically certified algorithm designed to detect early signs of exacerbations in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.
Éric Carreel, president of Withings, said: “I was impressed by Biosency’s medical rigour and the quality of its research in COPD.
“I see a strong alignment between the detection of respiratory exacerbations and the work we are doing in the monitoring of cardiometabolic diseases.
“This transaction is part of our ambition to build a strong and independent European player in connected health.”
Biosency develops remote monitoring systems for people living with chronic respiratory diseases.
With access to Withings’ industrial expertise and wider business network, Biosency will focus on commercialising and expanding its system.
The companies said the service, its certification and ongoing support for patients and healthcare professionals would continue after the acquisition.
Marie Pirotais, chief executive of Biosency, said: “Joining Withings will allow us to accelerate the deployment of our solutions while preserving the ambition that has driven Biosency since its creation: improving patient monitoring and care.”
The Biosency team will join Withings and continue developing the system from Rennes.
Withings created its first connected scale in 2009 and has since developed a range of connected health devices, including clinically validated products.
The company said its devices are used by more than 15m people worldwide and measure more than 90 biomarkers.
Withings is also developing risk scores and predictive algorithms as it seeks to expand its role as a partner to healthcare systems.
