Onos Health has raised US$17m in Series A financing as it expands an AI platform designed to help health plans assess behavioural health care.
The San Francisco company develops clinical intelligence technology for payers, using artificial intelligence to analyse healthcare claims, utilisation and clinical documentation.
Its platform is designed to give health plans greater visibility into behavioural health care quality and care pathways across their populations.
Onos said health plans including Aetna are using the technology to improve behavioural health outcomes while reducing the total cost of care.
The system combines claims, utilisation data and clinical documentation with quality guidelines to build a view of care pathways across populations.
It analyses both structured and unstructured data to identify care patterns, treatment gaps and areas for quality improvement.
Onos said its platform has found that more than 70 per cent of behavioural health care quality signals are contained within unstructured documentation.
The company said it built its AI technology using what it describes as the largest behavioural health care quality database, alongside work with health plans and medical leaders.
Onos reported a 35 per cent improvement in adherence to clinical standards and a 75 per cent improvement in clinical review efficiency.
It also reported a reduction of more than six per cent in behavioural health programme costs within 12 months, which it attributed to improved clinical quality.
The technology is intended to help health plans identify care patterns, treatment gaps and opportunities for quality improvement, and work with provider networks to guide members towards higher-quality, more cost-effective care.
The Series A was led by Costanoa, with participation from Flare Capital Partners and strategic investment from CVS Health Ventures.
Alyssa Reisner, vice president and general partner at CVS Health Ventures, said: “Behavioural health populations are often complex and require dedicated focus and coordination with health care providers to improve outcomes and affordability.
“Onos Health helps surface actionable clinical insights from data that has historically been difficult to interpret. It provides a clearer understanding of treatment patterns and quality of care and supports more informed decision-making and collaboration with behavioural health care providers.”
Onos says its platform is used by three of the six largest health plans in the US.
