Australian healthcare software firm Modeus has taken its HS8 electronic controlled drug register into the NHS, with Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust becoming the latest site to begin replacing paper registers with the platform.
The Melbourne-headquartered company, which has spent more than two decades building paperless medication management software for pharmacies, hospitals and aged care providers, saw HS8 go live in the Trust’s pharmacy on 5 August.
It is the first stage of a rollout that will eventually extend to wards and theatres.
HS8 is a hospital-wide electronic register for controlled drugs, designed to replace the paper books traditionally used to record stock, movements and discrepancies.
The system gives pharmacy teams real-time visibility of controlled drug activity in a single, closed-loop record, with the aim of cutting transcription errors, simplifying audit trails and supporting regulatory compliance.
For Modeus, the deployment is a foothold in the UK market. Its product suite spans pharmacy, aged care, veterinary and other settings where controlled medications are stored or used, and HS8 supports pharmacies, wards, emergency departments, intensive care units and operating theatres.

The go-live followed a period of work between the two organisations to configure HS8 around the Trust’s existing pharmacy workflows and systems.
Later phases will bring wards and theatres onto the platform, giving the Trust a single view of controlled drugs as they move through the hospital.

RCHT provides acute and specialist care for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, serving a population of around 470,000 that rises significantly during peak visitor seasons.
The Trust employs around 6,700 staff across three main hospital sites – Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle and West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance – with around 780 inpatient beds.
