Google Health and Abbott have partnered to combine glucose data with AI-powered guidance aimed at helping people make more informed health decisions.

The multi-year collaboration will combine glucose insights from Abbott’s Lingo biowearable with Google’s artificial intelligence and consumer technology.

Through the Google Health app, Lingo users will be able to see glucose trends alongside other health and wellness metrics, helping them understand how daily behaviour affects their wellbeing.

Google’s Health Coach will use the information to provide personalised recommendations on nutrition, activity, sleep and recovery.

The partnership will focus on three areas: connecting glucose data with a broader picture of health, delivering personalised AI-powered guidance and carrying out research into metabolic health.

The companies plan to integrate ongoing glucose readings from the Lingo continuous glucose monitor into Google Health to help users understand how their bodies respond to daily habits.

They also plan to combine the glucose data with Google Health Coach to provide tailored recommendations intended to help people build healthier habits.

Rishi Chandra, vice president and general manager of Google Health, said: “The future of health lies in turning complex health information into personalised guidance that people can use every day.

“Abbott and Google are creating a more complete a picture of health that can help people better understand the connections between their daily habits and overall well-being.

“We have an opportunity to provide powerful, personalised health insights that can help people live longer, healthier lives.”

The partnership will include what the companies describe as one of the largest real-world metabolic health studies to date, combining continuous glucose, wearable, laboratory and survey data.

The study will examine connections between activity, sleep, wellbeing and metabolic health, with the findings intended to inform more personalised guidance.

Abbott said rates of metabolic health problems continue to rise globally.

More than 115m adults in the US have prediabetes, with more than two in five adults affected and around eight in 10 unaware they have the condition.

Poor metabolic health can also lead to chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

The companies say the partnership is intended to help people better understand the relationship between their daily habits and overall wellbeing and take earlier action against health problems linked to poor metabolic health.

Olivier Ropars, divisional vice president of Abbott’s Lingo business, said: “The biggest challenge in healthcare isn’t treating disease—it’s helping people stay healthier longer.

“Abbott’s leadership in biowearables and Google’s expertise in AI and consumer technology create a powerful opportunity to make personalised insights available at unprecedented scale.

“Additionally, we are advancing metabolic health research through one of the largest real-world studies of its kind, generating new insights into the relationship between glucose and everyday behaviours.

“That research will help shape future AI-powered guidance and metabolic health innovation.

“Together, we can help people better understand their bodies and take action before health challenges become health conditions.”
